No new meetings have been scheduled at this time:

Membership application information:
There are a number of changes that will be taking place over the next several months. These changes deal with both the provincial branch, of the organization, as well as the local branch. Due to some administrative changes we will be unable to accept new application at this time (posted November 25, 2004). It is hoped that application will again be accepted in the new year. Your understanding is appreciated.

Previous Meeting

Tuesday, Sept 28, 2004 7-9pm Sobeys Sackville: Community room
Members meeting: This is the first meeting of the new year of 2004-2005. We were hoping to have our meeting at another metro location but we were late in making the arrangements. So we can try to select a new location either in Dartmouth or Halifax for the next meeting.

There is a lot to be done
and
with your help we will get a lot done

This meeting will be a chance to meet new and old friends, discuss what we did this summer and to recruit members to take an active roll on the board. So if you have been thinking that you would like to get involved more here is your chance.

The previous year saw us build our account so that we are sitting in the black, grow our membership and to formally register our local with the province's joint stock registry. In addition to this we participated with other locals and the Confederacy to review our association and to increase communications with other Metis groups as well as government departments.

Previous Meetings 2003-2004

June 17th, 2004 - 7 to 9 pm Sobeys Sackville location : Community room
Members meeting: This will be the last local meeting until September. In September we will be looking to elect a new board to oversee the operations of our association for another year. If you want to see the local continue it will need the support of its members. Please give some thought to how you can help in the continued growth of our group. I will make sure that your name is placed on a list for the local board vote in September. We will be looking for a Speaker, Deputy Speaker, secretary, treasurer and events coordinator.

May. 13th 2004 - 7 to 9 pm Sobeys Sackville location : Community room
This meeting was not so well attended. Of course there are a number of possible reasons like the price of gas and the time of year. However, in order for this organization to continue it will require the support of its members. Talking about support- there is an Annual General Meeting (AGM) for the Nova Scotia Confederacy of Metis coming in July. The organizers are looking for volunteers to help with a number of events. There will be 3 days and two nights of camping and activities.

In addition to camping and activities Saturday will see the actual AGM ask for names of those interested in playing a more active role and becoming a part of the board. This board sit over the provinical operation of all the smaller locals of which we, Eldawik, are a part.

April 7th 2004 - 7 to 9 pm Sobeys Sackville location : Community room
This meeting was very well attended. During the meeting our current speaker, Audra Owen, indicated that she would not be available to complete her term, after may 13th, due to educational commitments. This will be a tremendous loss to the organization. However, we wish Audra all the best in her endeavors. The duties of this position will be taken over by the Deputy Speaker.

This is a good time to remind people that the Eldawik Council will be calling an election of new board members for September. Please give some thought to how you can contribute to the ongoing growth of this organization. This year has seen a lot of positive change and growth due to the great leadership ability of Audra. We will be looking for a new leader with a similar passion and commitment to the goals set by the council.

More information on the board positions available and the duties of each position will be posted as they become available.

Again, thank you Audra for all your hard work.

Jan 15th 2004 - 7 to 9 pm Sobeys Sackville location : Community Room
The Jan 15th meeting was well attended. Our guest speaker was Mary White from the Confederacy of Nova Scotia Metis. Mary spoke on the Toronto Conference that brought together a number of Metis groups from across the country. Also in attendance were representatives from both the provinicial and federal governments, lawyers and law professors. They came together to discuss the Powley case and the results handed down by the Supreme Court of Canada. The information was well received by the members.

In addition, to the Toronto Conference, Mary White spoke of a meeting between the Department of Aboriginal Affairs for the province of Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Metis representatives from each locals as well as the Confederacy. This meeting took place on November 18, 2003. The meeting discussed the Powley case and what it could mean to similar groups in Nova Scotia. In order to proceed it was agreed that work would have to be done to gather information that supported the existence of Metis In Nova Scotia. The meeting resulted in the government representative, Ernest Walker, agreeing to provide a written letter stating what information they would require in order to start the process of identification, support and continued communication. The letter will be made available once a copy is received.

We would like to thank Mary for her time and effort.

Nov 13, 20037 PM to 9 PM Lower Sackville, Sobey's Community Room.
The Nov. 13th meeting was extremely well attended. We had a surprise speaker; Noel Knockwood. Noel provided a great deal of support and encouragement for the work being performed by all locals.

We would like to thank Noel for his time and effort.
